Questions homeowners ask us
Short, direct answers about estimates, permits, timing and emergencies.
Estimates and pricing
How do I get an estimate?
Call or text (713) 955-5350, or send the request form with a photo of the panel or the problem. We reply with an initial estimate and confirm the final price on site, in writing, before work starts.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
For simple jobs we can give you a range. For panels, rewiring and anything hidden in walls, the honest answer needs a photo or a visit, because the cost depends on what is there.
What affects the cost of electrical work?
The size of the job, how easy the wiring is to reach, the condition of the existing panel and wiring, the parts required, permit fees, and whether it is an after-hours emergency.
What payment methods do you accept?
Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, PayPal, Bitcoin, Check, Cash, Financing.
Permits and code
Does electrical work need a permit in Houston?
New circuits, panel replacements, service upgrades and rewiring do. Replacing an existing outlet, switch or fixture is usually a repair and does not. Rules vary between Houston, the surrounding cities and unincorporated areas.
Who handles the permit?
We do. As the licensed electrical contractor on the job, we file the permit and schedule the inspection.
Are you licensed?
Yes. Smart Choice Electrical holds Texas Electrical Contractor License TECL 32015, regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Scheduling and timing
How soon can you come?
Emergencies are answered 24 hours a day. For other work, tell us what you need and we offer the first available time.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Most are finished in one day, with the power off for about 4 to 8 hours.
Do I need to be home?
An adult needs to give us access to the panel and the work area and approve the estimate. For longer jobs, we agree on the arrangements with you.
Emergencies
What is an electrical emergency?
A burning smell, sparks, a hot or buzzing panel, water reaching the electrical system, or a sudden loss of power that is not a utility outage. If you see flames or smoke, leave the house and call 911.
The power is out. Who do I call?
If your neighbors are also out, report it to CenterPoint Energy. If it is only your home, or part of it, call us at (713) 955-5350.
