What counts as an electrical emergency

An electrical emergency is any problem that can start a fire or injure someone if it waits until tomorrow. If you see flames or smoke, or someone has been shocked, leave the house and call 911 first.

For everything else on this list, turn off the breaker for the affected area if you can reach the panel safely, and call us.

Call right away if

  • You smell burning plastic or see smoke from an outlet, switch or panel.
  • The panel is hot, buzzing or sparking.
  • An outlet or switch sparks or is scorched.
  • You lost power to all or part of the house and your neighbors have power.
  • Water reached the panel, outlets or wiring.
  • A storm damaged the service line, mast or meter on your house.
  • You feel a shock or tingle when touching an appliance or a faucet.

What to do while you wait

  1. Stay away from the hazard

Do not touch a sparking outlet or panel, and never touch wiring or equipment that is wet.

  2. Turn off the power if it is safe

Switch off the breaker for that area, or the main breaker, only if the panel is dry and you can reach it safely.

  3. Unplug what you can

Disconnect appliances on the affected circuit if the outlet is not hot or damaged.

  4. Downed lines

Stay far away from any line on the ground and call CenterPoint Energy and 911.

How fast we respond

Call (713) 955-5350 and tell us what is happening and where you are. We give you an arrival time on the call.

Who fixes what

The utility is responsible for the lines up to your house. The meter base, the mast, the panel and everything inside belong to the homeowner and are repaired by a licensed electrician. Emergency repairs to the service usually need a permit, which we handle after making the home safe.

What affects the price

We tell you the cost before starting the repair. It depends on:

  • The time of day and the day of the week.
  • What it takes to make the home safe right now.
  • The parts the repair needs.
  • Whether a permanent repair needs a second visit or a permit.

Should I turn off my main breaker?

Yes, if you smell burning or see sparks and the panel is dry and safe to reach. If the panel itself is hot, wet or sparking, do not touch it. Leave the house and call.
